There is a big difference between what our younger and more mature clients want when it comes to a smile makeover. Younger clients often want a dazzling white smile and a Hollywood grin. Our mature clients are usually after something a little more discreet and natural-looking. Fortunately, we have the skill and the technology to fulfil their needs.
The enamel on our teeth wears away as we age. This leads to a yellowish hue made worse by discolouration from staining. Coffee, tea and red wine can cause teeth to become dull and tainted.
For some clients, a simple clean is enough to brighten their smile. Others prefer the Philips Zoom Whitening technique. This is a non-invasive treatment that works really well. A whitening gel is applied and light activated to remove stains and whiten the teeth. The result is a natural, clean, white smile that makes our clients look younger and feel more confident. The feedback we get when they return for a review appointment is overwhelmingly positive.
Once the whitening treatment is complete, a touch-up is usually required down the track. While the whitening treatment can last for a very long time, continuing to enjoy coffee and red wine will have an impact—as will other lifestyle choices.
Many of our clients also use a take-home whitening kit for simple touch-ups. However, we recommend all our clients come back every six months for us to assess the health and whiteness of their teeth.
If teeth are crooked, misaligned or cracked then clients can choose to have ceramic veneers or porcelain crowns fitted. Veneers are glued to the front of the teeth to create a functional and even smile. Teeth that are badly damaged are replaced with crowns. We have an in-house lab and ceramicist who custom-makes our veneers and crowns.
Another popular way to straighten teeth—particularly for mature clients—is Invisalign. This method sees clients wearing a series of transparent aligners that gradually move the teeth into position. You can remove the aligners for an important dinner or big presentation. The aligners are virtually undetectable when being worn.
Many of our clients don’t like the look of their old amalgam fillings. When it’s a concern to them or it’s going to affect the aesthetic outcome of their smile makeover, I remove and replace them with a white restoration material.
However, if the amalgam is sound and the teeth are healthy—and the client has no issue with them—then I prefer to be a little more conservative in my approach and leave the old fillings in place.
We love to help you achieve the smile you desire. Importantly, we listen to what you want your smile transformation to achieve and ensure the results are age appropriate without being obvious.
