If you’ve been thinking: “I want straight teeth” every time you look in the mirror but you’re confused about how to go about it or are wondering whether you’re too old to do it, you’re not alone. People with naturally straight teeth are few and far in between and lots of people were afraid to get braces as teens.
The confusion and fear over the costs and a trip to the dentist may have you doubting whether you should even bother straightening your teeth. The truth is, crooked teeth are not only a problem aesthetically but for your dental health too. You are never too old to take care of your teeth.
At The Dental Room, we treat you like family. We will never recommend treatment that won’t benefit you. Dr Shawn Rama has over 15 years of dental experience and is a leading aesthetic dentist locally and internationally. All our dentists are accredited Invisalign® practitioners and The Dental Room has been awarded the Invisalign® Platinum Status in 2019. In other words, you’re in safe hands!
The Dental Room, with its unique decor and amazing staff, provides a dental experience that is like no other. We have made The Dental Room a relaxing environment that doesn’t look like a dental practice, but rather a space where you can feel at home.
Here’s how to know if you need your teeth straightened plus the options available.
Are you afraid to smile?
Smiling comes naturally. We can see that every time we watch a baby react to something they enjoy. Whenever we’re happy, having fun, being friendly or reassuring, we smile.
If your instinct is to hide your smile behind your hands or turn your head, it may be time for a smile makeover.
A smile makeover could involve a whole range of treatment options tailored to fix your concerns and help achieve your dream smile. These include gum contouring, teeth whitening, resin or porcelain veneers, Invisalign or a combination of treatments.
If you experience difficulties cleaning your teeth properly after eating, or have trouble speaking clearly because of uneven teeth, getting your teeth straightened is an important way to help prevent future dental problems.
Can braces fix any teeth?
Braces are the recommended way to fix crooked teeth. This is true for conventional and newer braces. We can fix the following:
Braces and sometimes dental appliances like palate expanders are used to straighten your teeth.
If what’s been putting you off is the thought of headgear and/or big metal braces, you’ll be happy to know that there have been many improvements that have been made to dental appliances over the years.
If you are still wondering how to make crooked teeth straight without braces, you aren’t alone. Many adults have flashbacks of classmates with big metal brackets on their teeth.
Today, the metal brackets are much smaller and the overall look is much neater.
This is what most people think of when it comes to braces. These are metal brackets which are attached to the teeth and wires that run between them as well as elastics that tighten the braces to move your teeth.
Metal braces are highly visible and may cause some irritation to the mouth. It’s usually just a case of getting used to the braces and if you are worried about what they look like, coloured elastics can make them more fun from an aesthetic aspect.
Metal braces could make it more challenging to maintain good oral hygiene, but following your Dentist’s instructions and using a recommended mouthwash can help with this.
This type of braces treat a wide variety of teeth alignment issues and are in some cases the only option for very complex dental problems.
Ceramic braces are just like metal braces but the brackets are clear or white. They are a popular option for adults who need braces as they are less visible.
They are prone to staining but taking good care of them will help prevent this.
Lingual braces are like metal braces to a large extent but they are attached to the back of the teeth. This makes them invisible however the constant contact with the tongue may cause some irritation when speaking or eating.
Invisalign® is a discreet way to straighten teeth.
Invisalign® treatment involves wearing custom-made clear trays or aligners that move your teeth into place. Every week or two depending on your treatment plan, you change your trays so that your teeth continue to be aligned.
Invisalign® is well suited to treating many alignment issues. To find out if it is suitable for you, come see us at The Dental Room.
Invisalign® is a popular choice for adults because it’s nearly invisible.
The aligners need to be taken out to eat so you can eat whatever you want. . You will however, need to avoid hot as well as some sugary drinks.
So long as you are wearing the aligners for a minimum of 22 hours a day, they can be taken out for the odd special occasion.
The fit is precise and there are no wires or elastics so there is no irritation caused. Sometimes a new aligner may irritate the gums, but you can use an emery board to smooth the edges. It may also just be a case of your gums needing to get used to the aligners.
Most people find that Invisalign® is more comfortable with only the first two days or so of wearing new trays being uncomfortable or slightly painful.
The trays are easy to clean, simply use your toothpaste and toothbrush.
Treatment usually takes between 12 and 18 months compared to 1 to 3 years with conventional braces. Some people even complete treatment within 6 months at The Dental Room.
There is also Invisalign® for children. It’s not suitable for young children, but Invisalign® Teen is made especially for teenagers and takes into account that the teeth are still constantly shifting and that adult teeth are still coming in.
The first step in the teeth straightening process with Invisalign® braces at The Dental Room is coming in for a free consultation.
During this consultation, we will have a look at your teeth and listen to your expectations to determine whether Invisalign® is right for you and answer your initial questions.
We will take pictures, impressions and radiographs to create a 3D plan. All of this is done in-house. Once this has been created, we will call you in for a discussion and quote regarding treatment free of charge.
Once we get your go ahead, we will have the aligners made. All in all, this process from the consultation up until this point takes just over a month.
Once your aligners are ready, we will give you three sets at a time so that you don’t have to come in every week for a new set. You will need to change your aligners every week or two depending on your treatment plan.
At 4 to 6-week intervals, we will check how you and your teeth are doing and give you the next three sets of aligners.
Once your treatment is complete, you will need to wear a plastic retainer at night until your teeth have settled.
Your smile has a big impact on how you feel about yourself and how you express yourself to others. If your smile is stopping you from being yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin, it’s time to get your teeth straightened.
As your smile gets closer to that perfect smile, you can celebrate each milestone and when you have your perfect smile it’s one of the best feelings and you’ll feel free to express that.
At The Dental Room, we believe that everyone deserves an amazing smile, so if it’s the cost that’s holding you back, come chat to us about our interest-free payment plans.
