Clear Braces - Is It The Perfect Solution To Getting An Amazing Smile?

What Are clear braces?

At The Dental Room, we see many adult and maturely aged clients who wish their teeth were straighter, but think that it’s all too late to make a difference. Put off by the idea of traditional braces, they feel they have missed the boat. Nothing could be further from the truth (or tooth!). Traditional metal braces are not your only option, no matter your age.

Today, we have more aesthetically pleasing options called clear aligner therapy. Invisalign® is a popular method used to straighten teeth. Some call these ‘clear braces’. Read on to discover what they are and whether or not it’s your perfect solution to achieving your dream smile.

Clear braces are a simplified term for dental appliances made of flexible clear plastic with the aim of correcting your teeth positions. These are usually referred to as aligners and are custom made specifically to fit your teeth. There are many different brands of clear braces available today, one of which being Invisalign®.

Clear invisible braces – Invisalign®

Invisalign®, an alternative form of braces that was developed in 1997.

Since the first release of these revolutionary Invisalign® braces, the treatment is now a very popular way to straighten teeth. It’s available in over 100 countries with over 7 million people successfully treated.

This alternative form of orthodontic treatment uses CAD CAM technology to create clear plastic removable aligners (or trays) that reposition your teeth instead of using brackets and wires. Each aligner within the prescribed sequence are slightly different and they each apply gentle pressure over time to move your teeth into position. Treatment may require the use of tooth colored attachments or ‘buttons’ that help the aligners to grip the tooth to be able to move it more effectively. These aligners need to be worn for 22 hours a day and are only removed during eating and brushing.

Does Invisalign® work as well as metal braces?

Contrary to popular belief, Invisalign technology is now so advanced and predictable that it can be used to treat a range of moderate to severe teeth straightening issues, not just for cosmetic fine-tuning. With their innovative technology, Invisalign® accredited dentists and orthodontists can successfully fix many types of orthodontic movements.

However, it is important to note that there are some conditions that are better treated with braces, while some are better with clear braces. It is always best to see a dentist first, who will determine the best treatment for your teeth. Depending on the alignment severity, your dentist is able to recommend the options available to you in regards to your teeth and what will help you achieve the best results.

Invisalign®, is quite capable of treating most orthodontic issues including:

  • Underbites: When the bottom row of teeth jut forward and go over the top teeth.
  • Overbites: The opposite of an underbite.
  • Open bites: When the top and bottom teeth can’t physically meet.
  • Overcrowding: When some or all of your teeth are out of proper alignment or in the wrong places due to insufficient space for teeth along the jawline.
  • Crooked teeth: One or several teeth that are crooked.

Which braces are the best?

Braces shouldn’t be considered as one type being better than the other. Rather, it has more to do with which will be best for your teeth

Some movements of teeth are more predictable with traditional braces, and vice versa with Invisalign®. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but to choose one will greatly depend on each individual’s case.

During the initial consultation at The Dental Room, we can go through the pros and cons of each type of appliance, and decide whether Invisalign® is the right choice for you.
